During the summer, most of the country experiences record highs, and if you live in a humid climate, the dangers become even more severe. Not only should you find ways to stay hydrated and cool, but don’t forget about your dog too! Here are some tips to help keep your dog comfortable during the summer heat.

Exercise early or late

Temperatures tend to be milder during the early morning hours, or later in the evening. Exercise is a must for your four-legged friend, but the summer heat can put a damper on this necessary activity. Be sure to plan on taking your dog out for walks or jogs early in the day, before it gets too hot, or later in the evening when it tends to be a bit cooler.

Protect your dog’s feet

If you think the air is hot, think about the pavement. Protect your dog’s feet by using doggie boots, found at your local pet supply store, if you must take your dog out during the hottest part of the day. You can also use these boots during the winter, to help keep those little paws warm.

Keep hydrated

Watch for signs of dehydration. Since dogs don’t sweat, they pant to cool off. However, if you notice your dog is drooling more than usual, appears pale, and lethargic, dehydration may be settling in. To avoid this, always give your dog plenty of water during the day, especially while outside. Better yet, bring water with you on walks. Just remember to bring a bowl or something your dog can drink water from, and remember that you both need hydrate afterward.

Stay cool

If you are not able to remain in the air conditioning all of the time, be sure to find some shade to hang out under or spray your dogs’ paws with cool water. Their paws can get hot, and even burned, from walking on hot concrete or gravel. You may even consider purchasing a small kiddie pool for your dog to lie in when it is excessively hot outside. Better yet, get one big enough for the both of you! Let your dog dig, too. It’s a way for them to help stay cool.

Never leave your dog in a parked car

This may seem like a given, but for some people, it’s not. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows down. You should avoid doing this anytime during the year, even when it seems cold outside because temperatures inside of a vehicle can quickly rise when the sun is out. Temperatures inside a vehicle can increase quickly, making it unbearable and suffocating. Avoid taking your dog with you if you have stops to make before getting to your final destination. If you want to take your dog along with you, look for stores that are pet-friendly.
