Here’s Why it’s Important to Groom your Dog Before Winter

lunaMorristown, TN

We’ve talked in the past about the importance of getting your dog groomed, but did you know that grooming needs change from season to season? You can probably feel it on those chilly mornings right now, but winter will be here before we know it. That’s why, today on the blog, we take a look at grooming tips for your dog before winter: what should and shouldn’t be done, why it matters, and why you should trust your dog’s grooming needs to the professionals.

Your guide to fall grooming

  • Increase your brushing: You’ll want to brush your dog more. They’ve already begun growing their winter coat and frequent brushing helps manage shedding while also keeping the coat looking healthy. You want to be especially diligent about brushing if your dog has a thick undercoat; otherwise, mats will form.
  • Skin and coat: Make sure to observe the condition of their skin and coat. If you see any flakiness or other signs of irritation, you may need to adjust your home grooming routine, such as incorporating shampoo and conditioner that have moisturizing qualities. As colder weather usually brings wetter conditions and more mud, you also will want to inspect your dog’s paws often to look for dirt and debris getting trapped in and around your dog’s paws.
  • Ears and eyes: Don’t be surprised if your dog becomes more active in the fall – a topic we will address in a future blog. Spending more time out of doors in the cool and breezy weather can cause debris to accumulate around your dog’s ears and eyes. You want to check and clean them regularly to prevent an infection, especially if your dog has pointed ears.
  • Nutrition matters: Your dog is what he or she eats, and the condition of their coat is tied directly to their diet. In anticipation of the colder weather, make sure your dog is consuming a diet that is chock full of omega fatty acids and other nutritional factors that support a healthy coat and healthy skin.
